If you home have wall-to-wall carpeting, you're going to need a vacuum cleaner. To prevent excessive wear, track your frequent routes, Buy cheap, sturdy rugs to place over the carpet in high-traffic areas. If you spill something, deal with it then. Carpet are usually treated with stain-resistant chemicals, so if you act quickly, you should be able to keep it from staining.

First, blot the area until it's completely dry with a clean, dry cloth or a paper towel; scrubbing will only spread the stain. As you blot, work from the edge of the spill inwards, again, to prevent spreading. If your spill is semi-solid, scrape it gently with a metal spoon after you blot it. Vacuum the area after you scrape as much of the spill off as you can. Next, clean the area with the detergent solution. If you decide to use chemical spot remover, test it on a hidden area beforehand to make sure it won't damage the carpet.

Wine or grape juice

Blot up as much of the spill as possible, then neutralize the area with a white vinegar solution: 1/3 cup of white vinegar mixed with 2/3 cup of water. Use the detergent solution; mix 1/4 teaspoon of liquid dishwashing detergent with 1 cup of lukewarm water.

Blood

Everything you use on a bloodstain must be cool. Heat will set the stain and make it permanent. Blot up as much of the blood as possible, and then neutralize it by saturating the spot with an ammonia solution. Mix 2 tablespoon of household ammonia per cup of water. Continue to blot the stain. If this doesn't remove all the blood, try using the detergent solution. Remember to make it with cold water.

Oil

Oil and water don't mix...that's why it's so hard to clean oil out of anything. Your best bet is to apply isopropyl rubbing alcohol or a clean cloth, paper towel, or cotton ball, and dab the oil spay until it disappears. If this doesn't work, use a detergent solution.

Bubble gum

Rub an ice cube over the gum to freeze it, then shatter the gum and vacuum it up.

Wax

Spread a brown paper bag over the hardened wax, and iron the bag with a warm iron. The paper will absorb the wax.

Rust

Rust can often form where the metal legs of a piece of furniture rub against the carpet. To remove the rust stain, spray lemon juice on the spot. Saturate it completely, and wait five minutes. Then blot up as much of the lemon juice as possible with a paper towel. Clean the lemon juice out of the carpet using the detergent solution.
