The concept of the master bath has come of age in the past decade. It is one of the popular rooms to remodel and gives one of the highest returns in investment upon resale. It’s where you can create that sought-after getaway, the home version of a European spa.
Some popular amenities to include in your plan are a sauna, greenhouse, exercise studio, fireplace, audio and video systems, faucets and whirlpool tub, and dressing table. You are only limited by size and imagination, and some local codes. Extras can be tempting but may require special planning.
For example, you may need additional support in the floor, as well as supplemental heating and ventilation. You would not want to slip into a tub and have it fall two floors to the middle of the living room.
Unfortunately, this really does happen when the weight of an oversized contemporary tub is installed on top of a 50-year old floor. Older houses simply weren’t built to accommodate the volume of water some people now use when bathing.
Some of the best floor plans for the modern adult bath also include a separate room for the toilet and bidet, a detached tub and shower, and dual sinks on opposite sides of the room with adjacent dressing rooms and walk-in closets.
