How to paint a room in any area of the home

One of the easiest and least expensive ways to brighten a dingy room or give a dull one character is to splash a fresh paint color on the walls. This is also a good time to think about arranging your furniture so it not only makes the most of the features that caused you to fall in love with your home. You've got two general types of paint to choose from: oil-based (alkyd) and water-based (latex).
The success of any paint job begins with proper surface preparation
Check the walls, do you see any cracks or holes? Repair these before painting. Small cracks can be filled with spackling compound. Before filling the opened crack, clean out any debris and wipe the crack and area around it with a damp cloth. Use a sanding block that fits into the palm of your hand. Sand until the repaired area is as smooth as the rest of the wall.
Before you begin
Make sure the room is as free of dust as possible. Also protect the floor and furniture with drop cloth. The next step is priming the repaired area. If you don't prime the repaired area, it will show though your work. Apply a thin layer of primer over the repaired area several times. Priming will give you a fresh palette to work on. Flat paint is the most common kind for wall and ceilings, and is easy on the eye, reflect little light, reduce glare, and help hide small imperfections.
To figure out how much paint you need
Measure the perimeter of your room. Measure the room length and multiply it by the width to determine the approximate square footage. Start by using a brush to outline the perimeter of the room. Work from top to bottom; and outline first, then use a roller to fill in the rest of the walls. If you're painting the room's ceiling in addition to the walls, start there first. Then move on to the door and window trim. Working from the unpainted area into the wet paint.
